Bent
Leather Band – Joanne Cannon and Stuart Favilla
Stuart
Favilla and Joanne Cannon, the Bent Leather Band, (Melbourne,
Australia) have been
developing electronic music and instruments together for over fifteen
years.
Their musical perspective encompasses the paradigm of live ensemble
improvisation and the nature of playability [developing
expressive practicable instruments] and considers that these two
elements should be in governance with a musical language. Since 2001,
their ensemble the Bent Leather Band has toured nationally and
internationally with notable performances and shows at Metronome
[Barcelona], SARC [Belfast], and at IrCam's Espace du Projection
[Paris] for Festival Agora and Festival Resonances. Their
work on Grainger has been recognized with a number of International
prizes including winners of the 2004 Karl Szucka Preis and the
IAWM New Genre Prize, and as finalists in the program music category
for 2006 Bourges Prize. They are currently research officers
attached to Victoria University's Centre for Telecommunications and
Microelectronics where they are researching new instrument technologies,
extended instruments and musical microstructure.
Joanne Cannon is one of Australia's leading bassoonists and
experimental musicians. Her work is recognized for its combination of
improvisation, experimental instruments and computer interaction. Joanne
began her career as a professional Orchestra musician, but felt the
bassoon was limited in this setting. She left the orchestra to pursue
composition and improvisation and or over 15 years she has developed new
frontiers, extending the bassoon's capabilities, developing microtonal
and multi-phonic techniques, and through the composition of scored works
for the virtuoso. She has also developed a number of spectacular digital
wind controller instruments including the leather Serpentine-bassoon and
Contra-monster. A polished performer, Joanne has presented a number of
solo shows and her work has received excellent reviews in the Double
Reed. Winner of the 2006 IAWM International New Genre prize, Joanne's
contribution through Blisters and the Bent Leather Band has gained her
global recognition as one of the world's leading meta- [modified]
instrumentalists and exponent of live signal processing.
One of Australia's most innovative and creative musicians, Stuart Favilla specializes in synthesizer performance. Stuart studied with
notable Australians Keith Humble, Jeff Pressing, Graham Hair, Michael
Harvey and Simone de Haan. He has been recognized both for his talent
and for the innovations he has contributed to the field of computer
music. A composer/performer/instrument-builder Stuart's considerable
skill base encompasses virtuosic performance, composition,
improvisation, software programming, electronics, music-production,
instrument building, teaching and research. A professional musician,
Stuart is also an ophthalmic electro-physiologist for the Monash
Hospital [Melbourne] and remains Australia's only professional theremin
teacher.
Stuart
has formed and directed Australia's two most successful ensembles in the
field of new instruments; Blisters; [1st Prize in the 2004 International
Karl Szucka Pries], and the Bent Leather Band [winner of the 2006 IAWM
New Genre Prize] and 2006 Bourges finalist in the [Program music
category].
